In 2015, the Spirit Foundation held it’s first “Shake It for a Cure” Zumbathon, a fundraiser to be held each year during the Cervical Cancer Awareness month of January. All funding for the Spirit Foundation goes toward the “Con Amor Aprendemos,With Love We Learn” educational programs and towards providing free cervical cancer screening pap tests to uninsured women and free healthcare to residents of the Open Door Community Homeless Shelter.
The Spirit Foundation’s mission is to increase awareness of HPV and to provide clinical services for the detection & prevention of cervical cancer in Georgia and around the world. Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In the US, 75 million people are infected with HPV. For most people who are infected, the body’s immune system will clear the virus but a subset will develop cancer. Approximately 34,000 people develop HPV related cancers annually and 14,000 develop cervical cancer each year.
In January, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, the Spirit Foundation hosts the annual “Shake It for a Cure” Zumbathon lead by certified zumba instructors. The goal of the zumbathon is to galvanize community involvement, increase awareness of HPV and cervical cancer and link people in the local Atlanta community to valuable information and resources from our sponsors. The proceeds from the “Shake It for a Cure” Zumbathon are used to provide free cancer screens, preventive services and treatment to the homeless and uninsured at the Open Door Community Harriett Tubman Clinic. Additionally, proceeds will go to help our educational programs in Latin America, Haiti, Africa, and local area high schools.
